Cabin
Soles
 |
The first thing people notice as
they step inside your boat is the cabin sole.
Nothing says “yacht” quite like a new teak
and holly cabin sole.
Very few new boat manufacturers take the time
to seal the underside and edges. |
Consequently, the teak and holly cabin sole begins
to show moisture damage around the edges and hatch openings. Eventually,
the humidity that is common in boats begins to degrade the wood.
This leads to de-lamination and rotted flooring.
Dawson Yacht Carpentry makes a practice of
sealing the underside and edges of all our cabin soles with two coats of
epoxy resin. Then, to protect the hatches and hatch openings, we
install solid teak edging with more epoxy glue and stainless steel fasteners.
Appropriate sized lifting handles on the cabin sole hatches completes the
new teak and holly floor installation. Notice the teak grate at the
base of the companionway ladder in the adjacent photograph.
